I have recently read with some interest that Warminster Town Council have been putting these little yellow fish sticker things next to the drains in their roads.

This is to highlight that many of these road drains (also known as gullies) often drain untreated directly into natural water courses, such as a stream or river, and not into a sewer, therefor nothing other than the rain water should be put down them, and especially not things such as Engine Oil, or other liquid waste such as car washing water, coffee, tea etc.

This is true of many of such drains on Calne’s roads too, especially the roads adjacent to the River Marden and Abberd Brook. I think it is a good thing to educate residents and remind them that you should not be disposing of liquid waste down these drains, so maybe Calne Town Council could do something similar.

What I found really ironic about this article though, was that these little yellow fish stickers were funded by one of our area’s biggest polluters of our rivers, Wessex Water. You couldn’t make this up!
